The KannyAward was conceived by Ahmad Mohammad Sarari, CEO, Sarari Klassique Merchandize in 2003. This idea was born out of the need for the emerging Kannywood Industry to have a befitting award that would confer recognition and reward the multitude of talent contributing towards the development of Hausa film making.
The 2nd KannyAward in 2014 is divided into three different awards comprising Of the Yellow/Popular Awards, Jurors Award and Special/Merit Award. The yellow award covers 4 categories, and the jurors award covers
In the yellow awards the nominees were, as the name suggests, the most popular through the votes received by nominees from public voting. In this category the following were the winners:
1. BEST ACTOR Ali Nuhu won this category with majority votes
2. BEST ACTRESS Nafisa Abdullahi won
3. BEST DIRECTOR Yasin Awwal won the popular votes
4. BEST COMEDIAN Rabil Musa Dan Ibro won this award posthumously too
In the main event, the Juror’s award there were 18 categories comprising of:
1. BEST ACTOR Where Sadik Sani Sadik won the award from the film “Dinyar Makaho” Beating popular actor and last year’s recipient Ali Nuhu with his film “Sai a Lahira” and Adam A. Zango with the film “Saki Kowa”
2. BEST ACTRESS Hadiza Gabon amid tears accepted her trophy as the best female actress from her role in “Daga ni sai ke” beating popular actress Rahama Sadau with the film “Sabuwar Sangaya” and Ummi El-Abdul in the film “Duniyar nan”
3. BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR Mustapha Naburuska won in this category from the film “Basaja takun karshe” beating the best actor winner Sadik Sani Sadik in the film “Ashabul Kahfi” and Isa Adam from the film “Zee Zee”
4. BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS Fati Washa in the film “Ya daga Allah” beats the best actress Hadiza Gabon in the film “Sawun Baya”
5. BEST DIRECTOR Aminu Saira with the film “Ashabul Kahfi”, once again clinch the title of best director, two times in a row as he holds last year award, beating the emerging new director, Bashir Rijau, with his powerful film “Sarki Jatau” that got equal nomination with Ashabul Kahfi.
6. BEST CINEMATOGRAPHER Ahmadu Bello with the film “Sarki Jatau” won this category beating two other contenders that includes Murtala Balala with the film “Ya daga Allah”. The other losing contender in this category was Nasiru Dorayi with his film “Bincike”
7. BEST VILLIAN Aisha Dankano beats two other male contenders in this category with her role in the film “Uwar Mugu”. The others were Sadisu Sawaba in the film “Duniyar nan” and Al-Amin Buhari in the film “Ashabul Kahfi”
8. BEST COSTUME Zubairu Ataye won the best costume award with the film “Sarki Jatau” beating the duo’s of Usman Gombe/Abubakar Usman with the film ‘Ashabul Kahfi” and Adam M Salihi/Abba Daggas with their film “Tsakanina da ke”
9. BEST MAKE UP The duo of Alh. Suji Jos and Abubakar Indabawa won this category with the film “Ashabul Kahfi” beating another duo of Surajo Suji Jos and Sale Yaro with their work in “Sabuwar Sangaya” and Tahir I Tahir in the film “Kaddara”
10. BEST SCRIPT Rahama A Majid won the best script with her story “Su ma mata ne” beating Bashir Rijau with his “Sarki Jatau” and Yakubu M Kumo with “Ya daga Allah”
11. BEST CHILD ACTOR Rahma Yasir won the best child actor award in the film “Gudan Jini” beating Hauwa’u Rabiu Rikadawa in the film “Ihsan” and Sayyada M Adam in the film “Bararo”
12. BEST SET DESIGN Faruk Sayyadi won this category with his work in “Sai a lahira” beating Auwal George with “Sarki Jatau
13. BEST MUSIC Alfazazi won the best music with his lyrics in the film “Saki kowa” beating Nura M Inuwa in the film “Sabuwar sangaya” and Nazir M Ahmad with the film “Sai a lahira”
14. BEST COMEDIAN Rabilu Musa alias Dan Ibro, the comic icon, once again and this time posthumously won this category with the film “Andamali” beating Rabiu Ibrahim, his companion and friend, who won last year’s award with the film “Gadar Zare” and Nasiru Mohammad Horo in the film “Hawan Dare”
15. BEST VISUAL EFFECT Muhammad Ali won this category with the film “Saki kowa” beating two other contenders, Ya’u Said Mubi with the film “Sakaina” and Faruk Sayyadi with “Sandar Arziki”
16. BEST SOUND Sani Candy is the winner of this award with the film “Sabuwar Sangaya” and the loser was Ahmadu Bello Hambagda with the film “Sarki Jatau”
17. BEST EDITOR Murtala Abdullahi won this category with his work in “Saki kowa” beating Aminu M S Mainagge with the film “Sabuwar sangaya” and Musab S B Dangi with “Sarki Jatau”
18. BEST FILM The race for the best film between “Saki kowa” that got three awards and Ashabul Kahfi with three awards too and Sarki Jatau with two was settled by the jurors in picking “Ashabul Kahfi.
Merit Awards were given posthumously to the late Emir of Kano, Alhaji Ado Bayero and the Vice President Arch Namadi Sambo, Nassarawa State Governor Tanko Al-Makura, Deputy Governor Kano State, Ahmad Mohammad Sarari founder and president and Abba M Lawan was given a life achievement award.
A thousand miles journey begins with a step and Kannywood had made two giant steps. It is evidently clear that the 2nd edition has surpassed the maiden edition in terms of organization, participation and integrity. KannyAwards has come to stay and in the coming years we look forward to it becoming a continental and international event.
